DHAKA, 29 December 2007 — The Awami League (AL) led by former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Hasina Wajed has urged the caretaker government in Dhaka to beef up security for its party chief and Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia, both in jail on corruption charges.
Expressing shock at the assassination of Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, Awami League leader Zillur Rahman urged the interim government to strengthen security for the detained BNP and Awami League leaders saying they also faced threats from extremists.
The Awami League leader urged all democratic and moderate forces to join hands against extremists in Bangladesh.
Hasina suffered minor injuries in a bomb attack on her rally by extremists during Khaleda’s rule.
