RIYADH,، 30 December 2007 — Filipino Welfare Officer Leonardo Eugenio Jr.’s condition has stabilized after undergoing a two-hour surgery on Friday night, a Philippine official said yesterday.
A team of surgeons at King Khaled Military City Hospital in Hafr Al Batin, led by Drs. Hazim Hassan and Hani Horani, operated on Eugenio for head injuries he sustained during a road accident last Thursday.
“Eugenio is now being fed through NGT (nasogastric tube) and his blood pressure improved to 120/60 from 100/50,” said Abdulgani “Jimmy” Umag, acting head of the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) in Riyadh.
Umag said that his colleague, who suffered multiple skull fractures, was still in a coma. “But I am optimistic that he would make it because the doctor told us that he had at least an 80 percent chance of survival,” said Umag, who was assigned with two others to watch over Eugenio.
The two welfare officers and three other POLO staff were motoring to Sakaka city in the northern region of Al Jouf, about 1,400 kilometers from Riyadh, when the accident happened.
As reported earlier, one of the rear tires of their Isuzu Trooper exploded and the vehicle overturned and rolled along Lina Road, between Hafr Al Batin and Al Rafa.
Umag and the rest were cleared by doctors after being treated with minor injuries.
