JEDDAH, 2 January 2007 — Mayor Adel Fakieh has approved nine new underpass and flyover projects as part of the municipality’s long-term plan to ease traffic around the city.
Ahmad Banafa, general supervisor of projects at the municipality, said that the expansion projects worth SR470 million would be implemented soon to reduce bottlenecks on key roads in the city.
“The projects are expected to be completed within 10 to 24 months,” Banafa said.
The projects would include construction of flyovers at intersections between Prince Majed and Ghurnata streets, Prince Muhammad and Umm Al-Qura streets, Makkah Road and Al-Iskan Street, Sari and Prince Sultan streets, Makarona and Hira streets, Prince Muhammad and Prince Miteb streets, and King Fahd and Quraish streets.
He added that the projects would also include the construction of both a flyover and an underpass at the intersection of Prince Majed Street with Palestine Road and an underpass at the intersection of King Abdullah Road with King Abdul Aziz Road.
Banafa said that more project proposals were being reviewed. Over the next five years, the municipality is expected to spend SR700 million on road improvements in the city. It is part of a boost in infrastructure development that the city has been given to cater for the rapidly growing population, he said.
