QASSIM, 4 January 2007 — Soil erosion in Deerah Graveyard in Qassim has resulted in exposed graves that have been scavenged by wild animals, the daily Al-Riyadh reported yesterday. An elderly local said that the cemetery has been there for over 70 years now.
“I noted that many of the graves collapsed a few months ago,” he said. He also said that animals are digging a large proportion and the people knew it. “I am surprised at the continuity of these holes and mudslides especially in the southern part of the graveyards. I attributed the occurrence of such avalanches of graves to those animals in addition to the fragility of the soil in this part of the cemetery,” he added.
Locals confirmed that filling up the collapsed graves with earth is a temporary solution. They are also requesting the Riyadh Municipality experts for a rapid intervention and to take necessary measures to protect the remains of their dead in the cemetery from this damage.
