JEDDAH, 10 January 2008 — Al-Nasr defeated visiting Al-Ittihad 4-1 in Riyadh in a stunning reversal that marked round two hostilities in the Prince Faisal ibn Fahd Cup football tournament yesterday.
Indifferent form continued to hound Ittihad in this competition and though their title chances are still too early to judge further losses would definitely hurt their campaign. Three-time champions in the tournament, Ittihad started on the wrong foot when they lost the match against Al-Watani 2-1.
At the Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Stadium in Jeddah, Al-Ahli continued their good performance and defeated Wehda of Makkah 1-0, adding another three important points to their tally. The only goal of the match came in the 66th minute from Fabiano.
Ahli, who opened the tournament with a 3-0 victory against Hail-based Taie, now have 6 points.
The Eastern Province teams had no luck yesterday when Al-Ittifaq dropped a 2-0 decision against Al-Shabab in Dammam and Al-Qadisia lost against Al-Hilal 3-1 also in Dammam.
Najran defeated Al-Hazem in Najran 1-0 and Al-Watani won against Taie 2-1 in Tabuk to round out the six matches on the day.
After yesterday’s results, Nasr led Group A on goal difference from Ahli though both teams tied on 6 points. Al-Watani were the third team in the group with 6 points but are right behind Ahli in third on goal difference. Wehda, Ittihad and Taie are in the fourth, fifth and sixth positions with no points.
In Group B, Hilal were on top with 6 points from two wins with Shabab in second place also with six points but with inferior goal difference. Najran took the third spot with three points, followed by Al-Hazem, Ittifaq and Qadisiya in that order.
The competition resumes with round three matches next Tuesday.
