RIYADH, 15 January 2008 — Police arrested two car thieves, aged 16 and 33, in the eastern and western parts of Riyadh yesterday. According to an official of the Riyadh Police, the 16-year-old Saudi youth stole a Hilux pickup truck from a Pakistani.
In a separate incident, the 33-year-old Saudi man was caught by the Khaledia Police when he was fleeing in a Nissan sedan stolen from a Yemeni. The police are investigating in order to find out if the two men have police records.
Last Friday, an Asian accountant in a private establishment was robbed of his car. “It’s a brand new Chevrolet 2007 and when I got out off the car, two Saudi youths snatched the car keys from me,” he said.
The vehicle was subsequently found on the outskirts of the city. The car was badly damaged and repair costs are estimated at SR25,000.
Another expatriate had his stolen car returned after two weeks. He said that he had found an insurance card and some perfumes in the car.
Police say that such incidents should be reported promptly since that will facilitate effective follow-up by the security authorities. “Public cooperation is highly desirable in order to prevent repeated occurrences,” the police spokesman explained.
