JEDDAH, 19 January 2008 — Some people like to have the option of having children well into their sunset years. They want this so badly that they may seek medical intervention to help them along.
According to press reports, a 70-year-old Saudi man from Makkah had some kind of medical procedure done that had something to do with ... for the sake of being polite, let’s just say it had something to do with procreation.
Indeed, local media reports yesterday didn’t go into too much detail, except to say that whatever medical procedure was done, something went wrong. And when something went wrong, a second operation took place to fix it.
Long story short: the man lost his ability to produce more children, and decided to sue the, uh, pants off the local hospital to the tune of SR20 million.
Abu Attiyah, the complainant, scoffed when the hospital’s medical committee offered SR100,000. Saleh Al-Tuwaim, a lawyer, told a local newspaper that patients have the right to sue if a procedure causes irreparable damage to an organ, any organ, and at any age.
