YANBU, 22 January 2008 — A group of thieves attacked a Bangladeshi worker yesterday, stabbing him with a knife and stealing SR270 from him, according to local police. The incident took place at Yanbu Al-Nakheel Road. The crooks stabbed the man after he reportedly resisted their demands. The victim was taken to a local hospital where he is recuperating. No suspects have been apprehended in the crime.

The robbery took place in the Rawdah district when Rashida Ifthekar Kholapurwala, a primary teacher at the Indian International School in Riyadh, went out shopping with family members on Wednesday following her husband’s departure for the United States on a business trip. “I returned home at 11.45 p.m. and to my utter dismay I saw the main wooden door had been broken and the whole house ransacked,” Rashida said, adding that she immediately called her brother-in-law, Yusuf Abdullah.” The robbers took all my gold jewelry which weigh 1.5 kilograms,” she said. ABHA, 22 January 2008 — A newborn was found abandoned in front of a mosque in this southwestern Saudi city, the daily Al-Watan reported yesterday. Locals took the newborn girl to a local hospital where she was declared healthy. The baby was transferred to a public social welfare center and police said they were looking for the parents of the child.

Child Dies in Fire at Residential Flat

ALKHOBAR, 22 January 2008 — One child died and several others were injured, including seven firefighters, after a fire broke out in a residential flat in this Eastern Province city, the daily Al-Riyadh reported yesterday. The fire broke out and quickly spread. The father of the family attempted to extinguish the flames but was quickly overcome. An unspecified number of family members, including the father, suffered burns while a child of unreported age died. The firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation.
