RIYADH, 22 January 2008 — Kingdom Foundation (KF), under the chairmanship of Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, donated $3,193,000 to Sudan’s Darfur region for building a complete village that will serve 500 families, complete with water station, clinic, school, police precinct, electric generator, mosque and mill.
The contribution was in response to an earlier invitation from President Omar Hasan Bashir of Sudan to Alwaleed to attend the Arab Conference for Humanitarian Support to Darfur that was held in Khartoum on Oct. 21-30, 2007. The invitation was handed to Alwaleed by Sudanese Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Mohamed Amin Alkarib during a meeting with the prince at his office in Riyadh.
In 2003, Alwaleed donated 80 tons of supplies for Sudanese flood victims to help the government deal with the massive destruction that happened in some provinces east of the country.
The donation that consisted of tents, blankets, medical supplies, hygiene service requirements, water pumps and first aid kits for disasters were shipped from Riyadh to Agiler via a private cargo jet.
Earlier that year, Alwaleed pledged a $10,000 donation to each family of the 115 victims who lost their lives in the crash of a Sudanese airliner.
Last year Alwaleed made a $360,000 donation to SOS Children’s Village in Indonesia and made a substantial emergency donation to Indonesia’s flood victims.
In 2006, he made a donation for the Yemen landslide victims and in the same year donated $1 million through the United Nations World Food Program (UNWFP) to the drought-ravaged people of Kenya. In 2005, he had donated SR20 million to Pakistan’s earthquake victims.
Other major donations made by Alwaleed included $19 million to South East Asia’s tsunami victims, $830,000 donation to the families of the Egyptian train fire victims, 80 tons of supplies to the Algerian quake victims, $500,000 to Jammeh Foundation for Peace in Gambia to fund a diagnostic center, one million Egyptian pounds in support of Mrs. Susanne Mubarak campaign for the treatment of children suffering from cancer, $5 million to assist in the rescue and rebuilding efforts in the wake of floods in Morocco, $5 million to support the Carter Center Peace and Health programs in Africa, and the rebuilding of Zayzoon village in Syria after it was wiped out by floods caused by a dam collapse.
