WIGAN, England, 27 January 2008 — Nicolas Anelka scored his first Chelsea goal and laid on a second for Shaun Wright-Phillips as the FA Cup holders marched into the fifth round with a 2-1 win at Wigan yesterday.

It was far from vintage stuff but Chelsea will be happy enough after Anelka got off the mark following his 15 million pound switch from Bolton.

His well-taken finish eight minutes after half-time set Avram Grant’s team on the way to victory and he then made another with a cool pass to Wright-Phillips.

With three minutes left, Antoine Sibierski lashed in from just outside the area for a Wigan consolation but Chelsea are still chasing silverware on four fronts.

• The binmen, builders and taxi-drivers of Havant and Waterlooville bowed out of the FA Cup with an Anfield ovation ringing in their ears after twice leading mighty Liverpool in their fourth round tie. The Conference South part-timers, who stand 123 places below their hosts in English football’s league hierarchy, finally succumbed to a 5-2 defeat.

But the last non-league survivors departed with their heads held high and a store of memories to savor. One of those will be the moment when Richard Pacquette headed them into the lead from an eighth-minute corner. A superb strike from Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva got Liverpool level but the home crowd was stunned into silence for a second time when Alfie Potter’s shot was deflected into the net by defender Martin Skrtel, who was credited with an own goal.

Yossi Benayoun claimed Liverpool’s second equalizer a minute before half-time and Israel’s captain went on to complete a 15-minute hat trick to spare the blushes of everyone connected with Liverpool, before Peter Crouch. Emmanuel Adebayor’s 17th and 18th goals of the season and a late own goal by Nicky Butt fired Arsenal to a 3-0 win over Newcastle in the first of three all-Premier League ties in the round.

Wigan were due to entertain Chelsea at the JJB Stadium yesterday evening while Manchester United face Tottenham today.

The only real shock of the day came at Derby, whose miserable season took another turn for the worse when they slumped to a 4-1 defeat by Preston, one of the Championship sides they will almost certainly be playing against next season. The Premiership’s bottom side were three goals down by half-time, thanks to a double from Karl Hawley and a Simon Whaley strike. Robert Earnshaw pulled a goal back but a Neil Mellor penalty restored Preston’s three-goal advantage.

Portsmouth were given a fright when Plymouth took the lead at Fratton Park through Scottish striker Chris Clark, who marked his debut for the southwest club by beating David James with a deflected shot.

But goals from midfielders Lassana Diarra and Niko Kranjcar ensured Harry Redknapp’s side were in front by the break and they held off the visitors comfortably enough in the second half.

South African-born midfielder Andrew Surman opened the scoring as Southampton ended Bury’s giantkilling run with a 2-0 win at St Mary’s. Grzegorz Rasiak added the second from the penalty spot.

A double from Andy Keogh and one apiece from Jay Bothroyd and Stephen Elliott allowed Wolves to easily overcome fellow Championship outfit Watford 4-1. John-Joe O’Toole was Watford’s scorer.

South Korea’s Lee Dong-gook helped Middlesbrough into the fifth round with the opening goal of a 2-0 win over League Two strugglers Mansfield, who were playing in the fourth round for the first time in 20 years. Jake Buxton’s late own goal ended any hope of them going any further.

Elsewhere, Richard Lambert’s goal ensured Bristol Rovers, who knocked out Fulham in the third round, continued their run with a 1-0 win over another League One side, Barnet. Coventry knocked out 2004 finalists Millwall with a 2-1 win at the Ricoh Stadium. Michael Mifsud scored the winner after on-loan Arsenal striker Jay Simpson had canceled out Stephen Hughes’ opener for the home side. Huddersfield edged their all-League One clash with Oldham 1-0 while League Two high-flyers Peterborough, managed by Sir Alex Ferguson’s son Darren, were cut down to size by Championship leaders West Brom, who claimed a 3-0 win.

Czech forward Roman Bedner, Robert and Kevin Phillips all found the net for the Baggies.

Four-Goal Rangers Move Seven Points Clear

In Glasgow, Rangers soared seven points clear in the Scottish Premier League yesterday after a 4-0 victory at home to 10-man St. Mirren. Chris Burke put the Ibrox side on the road to all three points with a 27th minute opener and after the visitors’ Will Haining was sent-off on the half-hour mark the result was never in doubt.

Further goals from Kris Boyd and a double from Steven Whittaker ensured Walter Smith’s side stretched their lead over second placed Celtic — ahead of the champions match at Falkirk today.

However, St Mirren started the match brightly and almost shocked their hosts by taking a 10th minute lead.

Ian Maxwell’s cross from the left was met by Billy Mehmet and his header was destined for the corner of the net until Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor dived to his left to turn it round the post.

Gers captain Barry Ferguson had the first shot on goal for the hosts in the 21st minute, but his free-kick from the edge of the penalty area was comfortably saved by St. Mirren goalkeeper Chris Smith.

Mehmet was then again denied by McGregor when his powerful low drive from 20 yards was saved by the Ibrox side’s shot stopper.

But in the 27th minute Rangers took the lead against the run of play.

Ferguson’s chipped cross from the byline found Burke unmarked at the back post and the winger had time to control the ball before side-footing home from six yards.

Boyd should have doubled their lead in the 29th minute but headed well over from only a few yards out after a cross from French striker Jean-Claude Darcheville.

St Mirren’s chances of taking anything from the match all but disappeared in the 30th minute.

Meanwhile, third-placed Dundee United won 2-1 at Kilmarnock. Barry Robson put them ahead before half time and Craig Connelly doubled their advantage in the second half before a late consolation from Gary Wales.

Hearts won 1-0 away to Aberdeen with Frenchman Christian Nade scoring the only goal of the game in the second half.
