RIYADH, 28 January 2008 — Police here have arrested five Saudis and a foreigner who are accused of muggings and thefts in various parts of the city. Tuwaiq Police Department received a call from two citizens who reported that heavy equipment had been stolen from parked trucks.
Authorities began sweeping the area and stopped a vehicle in the vicinity. They found the stolen material and two Saudis.
In another incident, Al-Suwaidi Police Department received a call from the parents of a Saudi girl who reported that a mugger had stolen their daughter’s mobile as she was leaving a shop. The investigation unit in the Al-Suwaidi Police Department deployed a special team to investigate. The mugger, aged 21, was from an African country and was apprehended. The girl’s mobile, as well as other stolen items were found in the man’s possession.
In a third case, Al-Sulaimaniya Police Department received a call from two foreign nationals who reported that three young men had threatened them and stolen their mobiles and money. The three suspects were apprehended after an investigation. Police found the stolen items in their possession; the three were all Saudis.
In a related development, police in Madinah said most thefts in the city were taking place on Mondays and Fridays. The reason, according to Col. Naif Al-Marwani, is that people will be busy with their work on Mondays and will close their shops on Fridays.
