JEDDAH, 6 February 2008 — Police were still investigating yesterday the gun attack on prominent Ittihad defender Ahmed Al-Dokhi.
Officials are expected to release a statement in the case today. The Jeddah police would not confirm or deny a rumor that a shooting suspect has been arrested.
The attack took place Sunday night when an unidentified gunman in his early 20s approached Al-Dokhi’s apartment in Al-Salama district posing as a food deliveryman. Reports said that the player struggled with the gunman, who fled the scene after firing two shots. One shot missed and the other penetrated the left wrist of the player. Eyewitnesses said Al-Dokhi pursued the gunman for a distance on foot.
Jeddah police spokesperson Col. Misfer Al-Juaed said a special investigation unit has been assigned to the case. The player said that he doesn’t know the shooter but he passed his description to local police.
Al-Dokhi and his family said that the player has no personal feuds, and friends and team colleagues describe him as a “friendly lovable character”.
Al-Dokhi played for the Kingdom’s top two clubs. Ittihad acquired the player from the Riyadh club Al-Hilal for a transfer fee of SR5 million in June 2005.
