JEDDAH — The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) had recently appointed car rally driver Yazeed Al-Rajhi national goodwill ambassador. A press conference under the patronage of Prince Sultan ibn Fahd, president of the General Presidency of Youth Welfare, has been set for Feb. 20 to formally announce the apointment at the UN building in the Diplomatic Quarter in Riyadh.
Saudi Clubs to Bid for 2009 Cup for Clubs
JEDDAH — Saudi clubs Al-Shabab, Al-Hilal and Al-Ittihad have signified their intention to submit bids for the right to host the 2009 World Cup for Clubs competition in December. Shabab and Hilal announced yesterday they were ready to host the event and sent a letter of request to the Saudi Football Federation for approval. According to the FIFA, clubs interested to host the event should provide their plans to their national football federation and the national federation will deal with the FIFA from there.
Saudi Motor Sport Federation
JEDDAH — Effective March 31 the Saudi Motor Sport Committee is to be known as the Saudi Motor Sport Federation. The decision to upgrade the motor sport body comes on the heels of the highly successful Hail International Rally. In announcing the decision Youth Welfare Deputy General President Saud ibn Abdul Aziz said the motor sport federation would include a president and nine members.
Saudi Handball Team in Iran
JEDDAH — Saudi Arabia have been bracketed in Group B with South Korea, Qatar, Japan and UAE in the 13th Asian Handball Championship that started with the opening ceremony yesterday in Asfahan, Iran. The championship also serves as qualifying tournament for the 2009 World Cup. Making up Group A are hosts Iran, China, Kuwait, Bahrain and Lebanon. The Saudi team had been in a training camp in Al-Qatif and played several friendlies in Cairo.
Open Int’l Bowling
JEDDAH — The Universal Bowling Center will mount the 2nd Open International Bowling Championship in Riyadh from April 5 to 21 under the patronage of Youth Welfare President Prince Sultan ibn Fahd. Prince Abdulhakim ibn Musaed, president of the organizing committee, told the press bowling stars from the US, Europe, Australia and Asia have been invited to participate along with the local and expatriate bowlers.
