JEDDAH — Toys R Us and Jeddah United staged a round robin Basketball tournament for the south Jeddah community at Faisal Park with Black team winning the title.
Faisal Park was the first park established in south Jeddah through the joint efforts of the Arab News, the Friends of Jeddah Parks, and the private sector.
Jeddah United selected the 30 best basketball players in the community and divided them equally into four teams for the tournament. Second place winners were the Green team of Abdul Rahim, Majed Otaebi, Othman, Ahmed Adam, Farouk and Amer. The champions were the Black team of Omar, Sami, Tawakul, Hamada, Sayed and Kalufa.
In the final game, Green started strong and led for most of the first half. But in the second half Black hit some key three-point shots and won the game by 10 points 28-18.
Members of the winning team each received SR 1,000. The second-place team split SR 3,000. Toys R Us provided the sponsorship for the tournament. Jeddah United invited sports psychologist Dr. Abdullah Al-Solaiman who addressed the crowd before the games.
The Arab News handed out gifts to all of the players and the committee. Adnan Hamza form the Saudi Basketball Federation attended the games and distributed the awards. The players commented how Faisal Park had changed their lives, providing a place to play and keeping them off the streets and out of trouble.
