MUMBAI, 2 March 2008 — Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh has cleared the appointment of Anami Narayan Roy and Hassan Gafoor as the new sate Director General of Police (DGP) and Mumbai police commissioner.
The duo replace P.S. Pasricha and D.N. Jadhav, who retired yesterday after getting three months’ extension, for which the state government was rapped by the Bombay High Court last week. Roy, a 1972 Indian Police Service officer is currently DGO Police Housing and had earlier been the police commissioner of Pune and Mumbai. Hassan Gafoor, a 1974 IPS batch officer, is additional director general of police at the Anti-Corruption Bureau.
Gafoor becomes the second Muslim police commissioner in Maharashtra since independence, after Syed Majeedullah, who was police commissioner from 1962 to 1965.
