AQBA, 4 March 2008 — A hospital cleaner who came down with a case of homesickness unsuccessfully asked the hospital administration to send her back to her home country. So she stripped naked to protest her plight as a last resort, the Al-Madinah daily reported yesterday. The worker who had been on the job in this small town northeast of Jizan for less than a week, resorted to this extreme form of protest after her request to be sent back home was denied by the hospital. However when she took off her clothes and ran around the hospital screaming, hospital administration quickly reconsidered her request and she is currently being deported back to her country.

ALJOUF, 4 March 2008 — If you’ve been to Saudi Arabia you might notice that as hard as a police officer might work, he has a hard time getting the respect of motorists. Traffic police are notoriously lackadaisical about enforcing traffic laws, in part because their fellow citizens often confront them rather strongly when they attempt to ticket them. According to yesterday’s Al-Riyadh newspaper a young Saudi (locally called shabab) assaulted a police officer and fled when the officer attempted to document his traffic violation. The shabab was nowhere to be seen by the time the police officer recovered from his KO.
Boys Change Sex... on High School Diplomas
TAIF, 4 March 2008 — A group of high school students had to wait to have their diplomas translated to correct their gender. The boys, who were applying to go to university abroad, had to wait until education officials corrected the mistakes on their diplomas that states the boys had graduated from the Faculty of Education for Girls instead of the Faculty of Education for Boys. Considering how much more complicated it is for young women to be given permission by the government to study abroad (which includes requiring that their male guardian accompany them) the boys are probably wise to ensure there is no confusion about their gender.
