MUMBAI, 10 March 2008 — Goa Gov. S.C. Jamir took additional charge of Maharashtra state yesterday morning. He was administered the oath of office by Bombay High Court Chief Justice Swatanter Kumar at Raj Bhavan.
President Pratibha Patil appointed Jamir to take additional charge as governor of Maharashtra after Gov. S.M. Krishna resigned.
Jamir was given the ceremonial guard of honor on his arrival at Raj Bhavan. The new governor would deliver the customary address to a joint session of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly and Council today.
In a separate development, police yesterday rejected the plea of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) to stage a rally at Shivaji Park in suburban Dadar. Joint Commissioner of Police K.L. Prasad said the MNS request was rejected on the ground of the residents of the area objecting to such rallies.
An MNS leader, who requested anonymity, said it was regrettable that MNS did not get permission for the rally from a civic body ruled by a fellow Hindu Shiv Sena-BJP coalition.
