JEDDAH, 12 March 2008 — Makkah Region team sprang a surprise yesterday when they won the trio event gold medal on the third day of the Saudi Districts Bowling Championship at the Al-Gosaibi Hotel Bowling Center in Alkhobar.

The Eastern Province grabbed the silver and Riyadh the bronze. The team-of-five competition gets under way at 9:30 a.m. today.

The Makkah team of skipper Majid Aslani, Faisal Sugati and Fahd Al-Juraifani carded a winning total of 3,445 pinfalls. Easter Province bannered by Adeeb Al-Khulaifi, Maeith Al-Qahtani and Mohammed Al-Najrani totaled 3,440 pinfalls, and the brothers Badr and Hassan Al-Sheikh along with Ahmed Al-Hithyyan tallied 3,437 pinfalls for Riyadh.

Meanwhile, the Eastern Province managed to win the doubles event on Monday thanks to Adeeb Al-Khulaifi and Mohammed Al-Najrani who combined for 2,515 pinfalls, while second place went to brothers Badr And Hassan Al-Sheikh of Riyadh who tallied 2,441 pinfalls. Faisal Sugati and Ammar Turad of Makkah Region took the third position with 2,375 pinfalls.

Riyadh lead the overall standings in the FIQ-style tournament with one gold, two silver and 2 bronze medals. Eastern Province are second with 1 gold, 1 silver, and Makkah Region third with 1 gold, 1 bronze. Asir Region, the fourth team in the competition, have yet to win a medal.
