JEDDAH, 19 March 2008 — Jeddah United Sports Co. organized the Al Baik second annual Father and Son Basketball Tournament on a breezy Thursday night, with four teams competing in a friendly and family oriented atmosphere. The objective of the event was to promote family ties and healthy lifestyles through sports events, the organizers said.
Al Khalaya Airlines supported the event by offering tickets to the first prizewinners, giving all teams a greater incentive to perform the best that they could.
Four teams entered the event, and from the first game the sparks were flying. The teams played three boys and two adults together. The Al Baik team faced Omar Bill’s Brown team and the game was won in the last seconds 17-16 by Al Baik.
Each of the four teams played three games. The green team was eliminated by the Al Baik who, down by 10 points with three minutes left in the game, took the lead in the dying seconds to win 23 to 21.
The three remaining teams had identical 2-1 win-loss records. The top two teams based on total points scored then played for the championship.
The match-up was a repeat of the first thriller pitting Al Baik against Omar Bill’s team. Al Baik had lost three of their players who had to leave and had no substitutes. They played with four adults and one son. Omar Bill’s kids ran some fast breaks and outlasted Al Baik winning the game 23-5.
The winning team included Omar Bill Lowery, Abdullah Lowery, Racan Barnawi, Adday Abdullah, Jafar Smith, Motee Al Hafiz, Waleed Naseeb and Salman Naif.
The Al Baik team took second place with Ihsan Abu Ghazaleh, Omar Abu Ghazaleh, Mohammad Bakr, Abdul Kareem Abu Dawood, Ed, Adle, Khaleel, and Khaled.
Third place went to the team of Samir Al Wasiyah, Abdullah Assad, Marwan Assad Mohammad Awliya, Abdul Haleem Al-Sulaimani and Omar Naseef.
The ‘Most Valuable Father and Son’ award went to Ihsan Abu Ghazaleh and Omar Abu Ghazaleh.
Sports Bag provided gifts and vouchers to the winning teams. Jarir Bookstore also gave out vouchers to the winners of the foul shooting competition.
Guest of honors were Dr. Ghazi Madani, former King Abdul Aziz University president, Emad Madani, Saudi consul general in Dubai, Khaled Almaeena, Arab News editor in chief, Hassan Jamjoom, former Ittihad Club president, and Madani Rihaimi, an ART sports analyst.
Referees included Mohammad Hilmi and coach Amin Bahartha, and the announcer was Umar Abdul Salam.
There was a foul shooting contest for young kids, girls, and adults with gift vouchers and gifts provided by Sports Bag and vouchers from Jarir Bookstore. The winners walked away with trophies and the first, second and third placers received medals.
