PUNE, India, 1 April 2008 — The crime situation in Maharashtra is under control and there is no reasons for citizens to get worried about their safety and security, says new Director General of Police Anami Narayan Roy.
Speaking to Arab News on the sidelines of a press conference yesterday evening at the office of the additional director general of CID, Roy said the police have eliminated nearly all notorious gangsters in Mumbai. " I state and confirm here that all the underworld dons have fled India and are operating from abroad. There is not a single known underworld don now in Mumbai," he said.
On the subject of eradicating corruption from the police force, the no-nonsense police chief said: "Corruption would not be tolerated and strong action will be taken against policemen involved in corruption. No policeman will be spared or protected, irrespective of his rank," Roy said.
Commenting on media reports about some social workers and nongovernment organizations (NGOs) having been put on a state intelligence department list for alleged links with Maoist rebels, Roy said: "There is no such list prepared by the intelligence department. Naxalites (Maoists) have adopted this strategy of disinformation to divert people's attention from their activities," Roy said.
About reducing working hours of policemen, Roy said the police are meant to be on 24 hours duty. As a relaxation, the policemen are given weekly off. This is sufficient for a disciplined force.
