MUMBAI, 6 April 2008 — A metropolitan magistrate yesterday found the complaint filed by Amar Singh, general secretary of the Samajwadi Party, against Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) President Raj Thackeray false and dismissed it.
A senior police officer said that now the court had found the complaint false, police could file a case against Singh for lodging a false complaint.
In his complaint filed in February, Amar Singh alleged that Raj Thackeray had threatened him and he feared for his life. Singh lodged the complaint in the early hours of Feb. 3, saying MNS workers had disrupted a press conference address by him in the evening of Feb. 2. He claimed he had been receiving threatening calls on his cell phone.
Additional Police Commissioner K. Venkatesham said: “We found that the complaint filed by Singh was false and accordingly submitted our report to the court.” To a question whether police plan any action against Singh, Venkatesham said the court would decide the next course of action.
Another officer said that during investigation, police did not find any evidence to support Amar Singh’s claim. “We summoned Singh several times to seek additional information and also to provide us the video cassette in which he had claimed to have recorded the threats by MNS leaders, but he never turned up,” the officer said.
