DUBAI, 9 April 2008 — The first of its kind center in the Arab World to train law enforcement officers in combating drugs has been launched in Dubai. The center, which was opened by Maj. Gen. Khamis Mattar Al-Mazeina, deputy commander general of Dubai Police, will prepare Arab anti-drugs experts.
It will be called the Dubai Police Training Center for Combating Drugs and will come under the umbrella of the Dubai Police Academy. He added that the Administrative and Security Science Institution of the Dubai Police Academy would supervise the center.
According Al-Mazeina, there are 10 million drug addicts in the Arab world, a number that highlights the gravity of the problem and the need for programs to fight it. Al-Mazeina said that the training center would complement the work of Hemaya, a program launched a month ago by Dubai Police. The program is conducted with the help of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
Al-Muzeina said that Dubai Police would provide all financial and technical facilities to train people in combating drugs.
