DHAKA, 26 May 2008 — A court in the southwestern port city of Khulna yesterday convicted Mayor Sheikh Tayebur Rahman and the municipality’s public relations officer of extortion and sentenced them to seven years of hard labor. Tayebur Rahman and public relations officer Sardar Abu Taher were also fined 100,000 taka each and in default to undergo another six months in prison. On Nov. 3, businessman Kazi Abdullah Elin filed a case alleging eight people extorted 600,000 taka from him.
