RIYADH, 28 May 2008 — A burglar who raped a young woman after breaking into her home was sentenced yesterday to death by the High Court in Riyadh.

Police arrested the man, who was responsible for a series of burglaries in an unnamed Riyadh neighborhood, following reports from people in the area.

“While confessing to his crimes, the man said he had committed several burglaries and had threatened his victims with a knife,” a police representative told the court, adding the man committed the rape during his last robbery.

Investigators also showed the court stolen items, including gold and jewelry, found in the man’s possession. They added that the young woman had formerly identified her attacker beyond reasonable doubt.

The High Court verdict will go to the Supreme Judicial Council for ratification.

Meanwhile, police caught a man who impersonated uniformed police officers on the Riyadh-Kharj Expressway. Highway Patrol arrested the man, who is in his early 30s, recently following reports by motorists.

In another case, a car thief who crashed into another car in a stolen Toyota Camry was arrested on Sunday.

“We’ve handed the case over to the Investigations Department since the man had also kidnapped a 14 year-old school boy, who was found unconscious in the Camry, which crashed in the Badiah district of Riyadh,” said a police spokesman.
