ZARAGOZA: Saudi Arabia is the world’s largest producer of desalinated water and accounts for 29.2 percent of the total world desalination capacity, Water and Electricity Minister Abdullah Al-Hussayen announced on Saturday.

The minister made this comment during the opening of the Saudi pavilion at Expo 2008 in Zaragoza, Spain. “We will adopt the international best practices to achieve highest level of functioning in the water sector,” he told the ceremony.

Saudi Ambassador to Madrid, Prince Saud ibn Naif, earlier opened the pavilion and emphasized the strong relations between Saudi Arabia and Spain. “This special historical relationship, unchanged over the years, is deeply rooted in both civilizations.” Prince Saud said the two countries shared the same point of view on Middle Eastern and international issues. “It is important for both countries that these matters take the right direction to achieve peace and security worldwide.”

Both countries have signed cooperation agreements in different fields in the past and recently signed three agreements relating to the prevention of double taxation, general cooperation and health services. They have set up an Investment Fund to support investment projects.
