PUNE: A police team headed by deputy superintendent of police of Jalgaon Avinash Ambure was present in the Bombay High Court’s Aurangabad bench yesterday afternoon to explain the reasons relating to the ban imposed on the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) on charges of anti-national activities.
The Home Ministry of the federal government has, vide a government resolution No. 276 (E), imposed a ban on SIMI. The court had summoned the police officers from Jalgaon and Mumbai to have their say whether the ban on SIMI should be continued or removed.
The police officials told the court that they were of the opinion that the ban be continued as the Jalgaon police had registered 15 cases against SIMI activists during the period between 1998 and 2002, which also includes seven offenses against them prior to the ban on the organization by the federal government.
Meanwhile, in another development, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has made its intention clear that it was eyeing the Pune Lok Sabha seat.
The NCP state president Arun Gujarathi, speaking at a meet the press program by the Pune Journalists Association yesterday morning, said that his party would demand the Pune Lok Sabha seat, which is currently held by its ally, the Congress.
