TAIF: A bridegroom here had no other choice but to call in the police to protect him at his wedding, Okaz daily reported yesterday. The newspaper said the groom called the police after a relative of his bride threatened to kill anyone who dares marrying her. The threats were issued soon after the groom proposed to his wife. Her family accepted and so a relative, who does not see eye to eye with the family, also proposed. He was naturally rejected and so issued the threats. Lt. Ali Al-Rouqi, spokesman for Taif police, said a team of police officers was deployed at the wedding hall and escorted the newly weds to their residence at the end of the wedding.
Jilted girl wants lover punished
JEDDAH: “I will complain to the police. My boyfriend has refused to marry me. He has broken my heart,” a young university graduate told a psychologist here, according to local daily Al-Madinah. “This is a typical summer love story between young Saudi couples who meet over the Internet and speak via telephone,” Dr. Khaled Muhammad Bahadhiq, an expert in family and emotional affairs, told the newspaper. Bahadhiq, who is a member of a committee to curb divorces at the Municipal Council in the Makkah Region, said another girl complained to him that her boyfriend hit her and broke her mobile phone when she opened the issue of marriage with him. “Only 20 percent of summer mobile and e-mail love stories end in marriage, but 80-percent of these marriages end in divorce in the first four years,” he said, warning young couples against such hasty alliances.
