JEDDAH: In order for cricket to progress there should be total cooperation between all groups, said Khaled Almaeena, editor in chief of Arab News, at an extraordinary meeting organized by the Eastern Province Cricket Association (EPCA).
Almaeena said it pains him, however, to see divisions in many cricket associations. “It is very disturbing. Over the years I have tried to help gain support for the promotion of cricket here among the locals,” he said, adding, it is not an easy job because this game is alien to the culture here. Unlike basketball, which is fast becoming the second national game after soccer, there is little chance for cricket to rival these sports.
However, if games are organized and there is media support, some progress could be achieved, he said, adding that progress is made almost impossible by internal bickering.
There are certain people who are causing mischief, and creating chaos and confusion. “They should be identified. We don’t know what their motives are. That is why all associations should show a united front,” he added.
“Here in the Eastern Province we have a new player on the field — Abdul Aziz Al-Naimi has promised help and facilities. I have had a productive meeting with him, and was impressed by his sincerity and dedication. He is a noble man and will prove a great asset to the game,” he said.
“It is therefore important we all unite under one banner. In this connection a meeting will be held at the end of the month to erase all differences,” he said.
Almaeena added that he would sit with Abdul Aziz Al-Naimi to chalk out future plans to bring all clubs back to the original association.
“We will listen to all their concerns,” he said.
EPCA members welcomed Almaeena’s suggestion, adding that their organization, which has been conducting games for over two decades, would abide by any decision to improve the way cricket is played in the Kingdom.
EPCA President Sikander Farooqui welcomed Almaeena and briefed the audience about the group’s performance and progress. Fayyaz Aslam Shaikh, founder of EPCA, lauded the association’s efforts for the successful hosting of the last cricket season and pledged SR10,000 for EPCA to be used in a forthcoming London tour. He also presented a plaque of appreciation to Almaeena.
