RIYADH: The MBC network recently bought 40 Turkish serials at the rate of $10,000 apiece in an apparent move to make the Arab producers realize that it can find cheaper content by looking to a regional neighbor with a soap opera industry that is growing in popularity, Al-Jazirah daily quoted an MBC source as saying yesterday. The serials would be dubbed into Arabic and feature shortly for the Arab viewers who have been fascinated by “Noor” and “Lost Years”. It was reported a few months ago that Waleed bin Ibrahim, chairman of the board of directors of MBC, had threatened that the channel would opt to feature Turkish soaps instead of Arab dramas if Arab and Gulf producers did not reduce their prices.
