LAHORE: The Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) observed a black day yesterday to condemn the military takeover of Oct. 12, 1999.
At a rally held some 20 kms from Lahore, in the village where the vast farm house and real estate complex of the Sharifs is located, party leader Nawaz Sharif said the host of problems confronting the country today was because of successive military interventions starting in 1958.
Politicians had built the country, carried out nuclear tests, built motorways and did enormous development work, but Ayub Khan as the first military dictator sowed the seeds of divisive tendencies.
Sharif, who had soon after the Feb. 18 elections, joined hands with the Pakistan People’s Party to form a coalition at the center criticized PPP Co-Chairman Asif Zardari saying had Zardari, now president of the country, showed insight, the country would not have been on the verge of disaster it is now.
