IT coupled with medical sciences

Medical science today is highly dependent on computing resources. In an effort to attract more young IT talents to careers in medicine and scientific research, the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) has developed a virtual booklet, “Computing Life.” The online publication contains video clips of researchers talking about their work, interactive games and role-playing exercises.

There’s even a simulation of a potential pandemic flu in the United States. Check it out at http://publications.nigms.nih.gov/computinglife/index.htm.

Help speed up downloads

Download Accelerator Plus (DAP) 8.7.05 is available from www.speedbit.com. This is a great application, which delivers faster download times. The program works by splitting large files into smaller pieces, along with actively searching for mirror sites along the way. Additionally, the application can also preview some media files while downloading.

In an attempt to bring the joy of faster downloads to a much wider audience, the global IT community has been asked to lend a hand at translating DAP to new languages. A wiki site has been created at wiki.speedbit.com/doku.php to enable this worldwide effort. Arabic is already in the testing phase, but Hindi, Malayalam, Tagalog, Tamil and Urdu have just been launched. If you’ve got the talent, find the time to log on and participate in making DAP more accessible.

A library in your hand

The latest edition of Sony’s Reader Digital Book, the PRS-700, features an interactive six-inch touchscreen display that allows book lovers to flip pages with the slide of a finger. In addition, readers can easily search terms within a document or book, create notes using the virtual keyboard and highlight text with the included stylus pen. Five pre-set text sizes are available so readers can find the one most comfortable for them, and for those who need an even closer look, zooming in is as easy as tapping the screen.

For times when ambient light is not available, Sony is the first to offer a built-in LED reading light in the PRS-700. Expanded memory offers enough capacity to store about 350 average digital books. Using optional removable Memory Stick Duo media or SD memory cards, this Reader can hold literally thousands of books and documents, plus music.

The PRS-700 uses minimal power and can sustain up to 7,500 pages of continuous reading on a single battery charge. And because the Reader supports multiple eBook formats, including Adobe eBook and EPUB, it can be used with hundreds of thousands of free and purchasable books available from multiple eBook stores, websites and public libraries.

The new Reader will be available next month for about $400.
