RIYADH: An Indian businessman on a visit to New Delhi was abducted and murdered last week. K.T. Shamir, 40, owned a textile business in Riyadh and his murder cast a pall of gloom on the Batha business district of the capital.
His wife Wahida Shamir and four children left for India yesterday.
The culprits, who have been apprehended by Indian police last Sunday, withdrew about SR25,000 using the victim’s ATM. Shamir’s belongings and credit cards were snatched by the culprits before the murder.
The abductors, who used the ATM card at different locations in New Delhi, managed to get the secret pin number of the card at gunpoint. Shamir, who hails from a town near Kannur, Kerala, was a young business entrepreneur with zeal to expand his family-owned business in Saudi Arabia.
Fajrudeen Mooppan, general secretary of the Federation of Kerala Association (FOKASA), said he smelled foul play. Mooppan said FOKASA would call Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit to order a CBI inquiry into the murder case. “How can a businessman from Riyadh be taken by three people in a private taxi immediately after landing at the airport. The murder is still a mystery,” he said.
Mooppan called on the Dixit government to ensure that businessmen or workers traveling from Saudi Arabia are given full security. According to a police report, three people have been arrested in the case.
Shamir’s body was recovered on the roadside near the town of Gurgaon.
The dead body of Shamir has been buried after it was ascertained by the police that the victim was a Muslim. Indian Embassy spokesman P. Balachandran offered his condolences to the bereaved family.
