JEDDAH: The Marafiq sustainability award for 2008 was presented to General Electric Company (GE) at a ceremony held during the Saudi Water & Power Forum, which ended in Jeddah on Tuesday. The concept of the award is in tune with the forum’s theme: Change, innovation and sustainability.
“The Marafiq award for sustainability has been created to celebrate and encourage sustainable practices that demonstrate and promote environmental protection, and social and economic development, and I congratulate GE on being the first recipient of the award,” Thamer Al-Sharhan, president and CEO of Marafiq, said while presenting the award to Joseph Annes, president and CEO, GE Middle East and Africa.
“The criteria for selecting the award winners include the quality of their achievements and outstanding merits of their contribution to sustainability in the power and water sector,” Al-Sharhan said, adding that the award is open to all companies of any size and has been determined by a selection process in order to give it credibility and prestige.
Participants were invited to nominate any company including their own that had demonstrated the most outstanding achievement in delivering sustainable outcomes.
GE’s nomination was considered because it is fully committed to building innovative solutions that solve today’s environmental challenges and contribute to the economy, the environment and social welfare arena by supplying state-of-the-art technology such as gas turbines and reverse osmosis plants. GE has also been increasingly making its contribution to the environment by discharging safe water, he added.
