MANAMA: A local human rights group has set up a desk to receive labor complaints and file compensation claims on behalf of workers injured at worksites in an effort to take strict action against employers in Bahrain.
The Bahrain Human Rights Watch Society (BHRWS) will provide legal assistance and inspect worksites that are in violation of safety regulations. “We have set up an e-mail ([email protected]) to receive complaints and to take necessary action against erring companies,” said Faisal Fulad, head of BHRWS.
The group sought the support of citizens and asked them to inform it of any safety violations at worksites.
Fulad said there has been an increase in fatal accidents in the past few years. “We need to address this issue, as the authorities admit some companies are committing violations, but no action is taken. Workers who come to earn a decent living for their families cannot risk their lives,” Fulad said.
Residents can also contact the society to report violations and provide photographic proof. The society set up the desk after the Ministry of Labor said it did not have sufficient numbers of safety inspectors to visit all construction sites in the kingdom.
According to a study conducted by the Labor Relations Directorate at the Ministry of Labor, mainly unqualified staff manned the construction sector. The study added that basic industry safety procedures were neglected with some companies failing to provide workers with mandatory worksite gear, such as hard hats and boots.
The government is drafting a law on occupational safety, which takes into consideration safety environment at workplaces.
According to the bill, employers would be forced to report work-related accidents, even minor ones, or face punishment.
The draft law divides work-related accidents into three categories: fatal, severe and minor. The bill will help the Labor Ministry, insurance companies and the Health Ministry get accurate and fast information on accidents.
