MANY people in the business world think that Asia — particularly India and China — are going to be the future of the world economy. I totally agree with this statement but would like to add that Asia is a leader in many other things as well. India for instance is a leader in the movie and media industry and it has made a giant of both and now the Indian movie and media industries are familiar in countries all over the world. At the same time, China is a master industrial power — the saying is that if you want large quantities, low prices and everything done in a short time, China is the place. And this does not even mention Asia’s human resources and affordable tourist destinations. Dare I say more?

Dear Nadia. I am so fascinated with the abayas of Saudi women. I find them alluring and mystic and I love the designs and embroideries on them. I have been to the market many times and seen many designs but most are too expensive for me. I would love to take a couple to my sisters in Holland as gifts. Can you please advise me how to get a good deal on abayas?

Dear Caren, I recently had the privilege of visiting your beautiful country and I bought many souvenirs there. I know how you feel — so many choices but where to actually buy? First, go to the small tailor shops — usually with Indian or Pakistani tailors. They are experts at making abayas and offer good prices as well. You might find something ready in the shop but usually you have to order and wait about a week. You should always bargain with them; don’t automatically agree to the first price they mention. Make sure that they have the fabric you want — and there are many different kinds of fabric available. Second, check the local designers shops that sell only abayas. Ask them when their sale is — don’t be shy because everybody does this. Wait until the sale and then go back. You will be amazed at how low the prices are.
