JEDDAH: A sports and recreation center for women will be established at Princess Noura bint Abdulrahman University in Riyadh. Work on the project has already started and will be completed within two years.
“The center will be first of its kind established by the government for women in the Kingdom,” Al-Riyadh daily reported, adding that it would follow Saudi customs and traditions.
The enclosed center will provide women students a suitable atmosphere for sports and recreational activities.
Saudi Arabia lacks such public sports and recreation facilities for women outside of women’s colleges and universities. Physical education curriculums are currently banned for girls in public schools. Saudi women typically exercise at home, go to private gyms or occasionally can be seen outside walking at night.
