JEDDAH: A Traffic Council is being formed to outline and implement the Kingdom’s latest traffic policies, according to Gen. Fahd Al-Bishr, head of the Traffic Department.
Al-Bishr made the announcement on Tuesday night while speaking at a seminar, entitled “New Traffic Law and Executing Regulations,” at the Second Industrial Security Forum organized by the Jeddah branch of the American Society for Industrial Security.
The council, which will be headed by Interior Minister Prince Naif, will also include Minister of Education Abdullah Al-Obaid, Minister of Transport Jabara Al-Seraisry, Director General of Public Security Lt. Gen. Saed bin Abdullah Al-Qahtani, and representatives from the Saudi Standards Organization.
“The 85 articles of the Kingdom’s new traffic laws have been formulated after tremendous efforts and exhaustive studies,” said Al-Bishr, adding that international traffic safety standards have been taken into consideration. The traffic authorities have already started implementing the new rules, he said.
Al-Bishr added that the authorities are also in the final stages of setting up new traffic courts “so that the Traffic Department will not act as the prosecutor and judge at the same time.”
