KOCHI: India’s much-waited anti-terror bill is ready and would be tabled in Parliament in the current session itself, according to Congress party President Sonia Gandhi.
Reaffirming the ruling party’s commitment to fighting terror, she said: “Our ministers are in the process of discussing all these with the opposition, with our coalition partners so that as soon as possible, we can go ahead with this plan.”
Addressing delegates of the Congress party state conference here yesterday, Gandhi pointed out that the Parliament had passed a resolution condemning the Mumbai attacks and through this resolution, India “sent a powerful signal to its enemies and to the terrorists that the entire country is united in its resolve to combat terrorism. On Dec. 11, the home minister also assured Parliament that intelligence agencies were being revamped.”
“Let nobody have any doubt about the determination of the Indian nation and the Indian National Congress to defeat the forces of terrorism,” she said. “We will deal with such forces in a befitting manner.”
Slamming the Left parties for the second consecutive day for withdrawing support to the ruling coalition, she said a number of countries were coming forward to cooperate with India in nuclear energy sector after the country signed nuclear cooperation agreement with the US.
“The nuclear agreement will enable more nuclear power plants to be established in our country which will put an end to power shortage and load shedding. Indian scientists too would gain access to the latest in nuclear technology as a result of the accord,” she said.
“Left parties unfortunately have not been able to appreciate this tremendous achievement. But I am sure that future generations will vindicate the far-sighted vision of our prime minister and of our party.”
Gandhi urged her party workers to continue their good work and asked them to expose the failures of the Left government in Kerala.
“Never before has any government at the center given so much to Kerala and the Left government here is trying to take the credit for all the good things that the central government does,” she said.
“The Left here has failed to make use of the various centrally sponsored schemes. Various pillars of democracy in the state have been attacked by the Left. Whenever they come to power here, they settle political scores by resorting to atrocities against our party. People here are fed up with the present government and you should all work to give a befitting reply to them at the time of the Lok Sabha elections,” she stressed.
