PERTH: Western Australia has recruited Pakistani paceman Umar Gul for its domestic Twenty20 campaign as it bids to win a place at next year’s Champions League tournament.
The 24-year-old Gul has 20 wickets at an average of 12.20 and best figures of 4-13 in 13 Twenty20 internationals, far superior to his returns in Test and limited-overs cricket.
He is also contracted to the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League.
Western Australia coach Tom Moody says Gul would give his squad a significant boost. Moody told the said yesterday that the “importance of the (Twenty20) competition has risen considerably in the past two seasons.” He says “having Umar in our ranks ... is very timely.”
Meanwhile, Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik thinks Sri Lanka will make a tough opponent as replacement for India, which canceled next month’s cricket tour.
“We all are disappointed that India is not coming to Pakistan, but Sri Lanka is also a good team,” Malik said.
