JEDDAH: A 21-year-old Saudi man was admitted to St. Vincent Hospital in Sydney, Australia, after being attacked on the city’s George Street. The man, whose identity is not being revealed by Australian authorities, is in critical but stable condition, according to a hospital official who spoke to Arab News.
The circumstances of the attack, which took place after midnight during street celebrations to mark the New Year, aren’t clear and no suspect has been arrested.
“The student was walking with friends on George Street shortly after the conclusion of the midnight fireworks when he was pushed to the ground by a man,” said New South Wales Police Minister Tony Kelly. The Saudi was struck in the head with a bottle. Police are asking for witnesses to come forward.
New Year’s celebrations often involve a large number of intoxicated individuals. It is not clear if the Saudi was targeted for any specific reason or whether he was the victim of an altercation possibly fueled by the attacker’s state of mind at the time.
