RIYADH: About 86 Islamic relief agencies, including the Riyadh-based World Assembly of Muslim Youth (WAMY) and the International Islamic Relief Organization (IIRO), have joined hands to raise donations and distribute relief in the Gaza Strip.
“A proposal has been made to coordinate efforts in relief supplies on the regional level following a two-day meeting of the International Islamic Council for Da’wah and Relief (IICDR) in Cairo, which concluded yesterday,” said WAMY Secretary-General Dr. Saleh Al-Wohaibi.
The meeting in Cairo was chaired by Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Mosque Sheikh Muhammad Sayyid Tantawi, who is also the chief of Al-Azhar University.
Asked about the details of the proposals, Al-Wohaibi said details are yet to come from Cairo, adding that the meeting in Egypt mainly discussed issues on how to send relief supplies to the war-torn regions of Palestinian territory, how to unite in raising more supplies and how to complement government efforts.
In a related development, the Shourah Council and the Makkah-based Muslim World League (MWL) renewed their condemnations and made a vehement appeal to the world community to contain Jewish terrorism.
The Shourah Council has strongly denounced Israel’s aggression and ever expanding vicious attacks on the Gaza Strip, which has led to the horrific massacres of innocent people.
In a statement released here yesterday, the Shourah called for an immediate end to the aggression and for the protection of Gaza.
The statement appreciated the efforts of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah who has called on several world leaders to defuse the crisis. The MWL has also called on the UN to exert efforts to end the Israeli aggression against Gaza. Addressing UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, Dr. Abdullah Al-Turki, MWL’s secretary general, called the UN to save the Palestinian people in Gaza. “The Israeli shelling has led to the death of entire members of some families in Gaza,” said Al-Turki, adding that more than 600 Palestinians have been martyred and about 3,000 injured so far.
He added that Israeli attacks have also demolished 12 mosques in Gaza, an indication of the deliberate attempt of Jewish forces to destroy religious places. He also described the Israeli practices “as the worst form of state-sponsored terrorism ever known to the mankind.”
