MANAMA: The Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) has called on the Bahrain business community to support the island’s fund raising campaign in support of Gaza.
BCCI Chairman Esam Abdulla Fakhro commended the Bahraini government and people’s response to the appeal. He also expressed appreciation for the business community’s interaction.
The BCCI also called on Arab organizations to donate resources for the reconstruction of Gaza and requested the Arab Chambers of Commerce to hold an extraordinary meeting to discuss the issue.
Fakhro said that BCCI has proposed to include the reconstruction of Gaza on the agenda of the upcoming meeting of the Arab Economic Summit, which is scheduled later this month.
He also said he is seeking the Bahrain business community’s support for King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa’s call for an Islamic summit to mitigate the sufferings of the Gaza people.
Fakhro further praised the king’s initiative of reconstructing UNRWA’s Al-Fakhoura School in Gaza, which was destroyed in an Israeli air raid.
He said that the donation campaign was approved by the prime minister, who has given his full support to the cause.
Fakhro said the proceeds of the BCCI donation campaign would be included in the wider national campaign being led by Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad Al-Khalifa, chairman of the board of trustees of the Bahrain Royal Charity Organization.
“As an initial donation, however, the BCCI has already made $100,000 and is continuing to collect more donations,” he said.
The BCCI chairman also called for the use of every Arab gathering to support the Palestinian people in Gaza.
The Bahrain National Committee for the Support of the Palestinian People in Gaza has established several bank accounts to receive donations from individuals and companies.
