BAHRAIN: “Manahi,” a Saudi comedy starring Fayez Maliki playing a Bedouin who tries to become rich through a scheme in Dubai, has caused Saudis to line up at movie theaters in Bahrain. “The movie continues to be popular for the Saudi audience,” said Gerard Saad, general manager of Dana Cinema. Saad said the movie was first released on Nov. 27 and his cinema still continues to feature the film three times a day. “The movie is also showing in Jeddah,” he added, referring to the recent nine-day run of the film at various public venues in Jeddah and Taif where thousands turned up in a move hailed as a return of cinema to Saudi Arabia. The film was produced by Rotana, owned by Prince Alwaleed bin Talal. The Golden Age of the Arab film industry has slowly faded away and is now reviving with a new breed of young filmmakers. In 2007, the Kingdom’s only female filmmaker, Haifaa Al-Mansour’s movie “Women Without Shadows” was screened here at the Bahrain Cinema Club. “I have received a good response from those who have watched my movie in Bahrain,” said the filmmaker. “It feels good to be appreciated and there are good directors in the Kingdom who can make a difference.”
