RAMALLAH: A major attack against an Israeli target in Europe has been thwarted in recent weeks, Israel’s Channel 2 television reported on Wednesday, quoting security officials.
The attack, “linked to Hezbollah”, was averted thanks to intelligence sharing between Israel and an undisclosed European country, said the channel, which gave no further details.
The report said that Hezbollah planned the attack to avenge the assassination of Imad Mughniyeh in Damascus.
Last week, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak had ordered Israeli security services to raise their level of alertness out of fear that Hezbollah would increase its efforts to launch an attack against an Israeli or Jewish target abroad ahead of the first anniversary of Mughniyeh’s assassination on Feb. 12.
The assessment in the Israeli intelligence community is that Hezbollah is planning the attack in a way that will not leave behind its direct fingerprints.
