TAIF: Mohammed bin Abdul Aziz Al-Abdul Kareem, a judge in Al-Muwayah, yesterday sentenced a Saudi man to eight months in jail and 400 lashes, as well as digging 10 graves, for opening fire on his uncle following a dispute between them.
The man had entered the room of his uncle, wielding a gun with the aim of killing him, informed sources said, adding that nobody was injured in the incident.
The judge gave the verdict after the man’s uncle filed a case against him.
Handing down the discretionary punishment, Al-Abdul Kareem said the lashes would be carried out in eight equal installments within a period of seven months. The lashing in the last month would be dropped if the man digs 10 graves, each with a depth of 1.2 meters, within 10 days.
“If he fails to dig all the 10 graves, the sentence (eight months in jail and 400 lashes) will be applied fully without any reduction,” the judge said. He set up a panel to oversee the man’s grave digging work. The defendant rejected the verdict and said he would file an appeal.
