RIYADH: The Human Rights Commission’s women’s department visited a woman’s shelter in Jeddah on Sunday to examine the condition of residents there.

HRC members are also to meet Ali Al-Hanaki, director general of social affairs in Makkah, as well as Mohammad Al-Qarni, a member of the committee running the shelter.

The visit follows a claim by Al-Qarni during a domestic violence forum in Jeddah last week that sexual abuse was taking place at the shelter.

Al-Hanaki, however, responded that there were breaches at the shelter in the past but not anymore. “We will beat with iron he who thinks of taking advantage of victims of domestic violence and their children,” said Al-Hanaki.
