KHAR, Pakistan: Pakistani troops killed six Taleban militants while four civilians died in rebel rocket attacks in a troubled northwest tribal area bordering Afghanistan yesterday, officials said.
Pakistan artillery and helicopter gunships pounded underground bunkers of militants outside Khar, the main town in the restive Bajaur tribal district, killing six, local government official Farooq Khan told reporters. “Six militants were killed when helicopter gunships and artillery fired shells at their underground bunkers,” Khan said.
A car bomb killed eight people and wounded 16 yesterday near the home of a town councilor critical of militants in northwestern Pakistan, police officials said.
The bomb attack in the Batta Beir area on the outskirts of Peshawar, the capital of North West Frontier Province, targeted the residence of the nazim, or mayor. Nazim Fahim-ur Rahman, who had been entertaining friends at home, was unhurt.
“The explosive device was planted in a car parked near Rahman’s house,” city police chief Safat Ghayur told reporters.
“Eight people were killed and 16 wounded when a bomb planted in a car exploded outside the guest house of Fahim-ur Rahman,” local police official Granullah Khan told reporters. He said earlier that three people were killed.
