JEDDAH: A large football stadium designed to accommodate 100,000 spectators is soon to be built north of Jeddah following approval from Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah.
The project will include a specialist hospital to treat athletes, indoor stadiums and youth hostels. Jeddah is the second largest city in the Kingdom after Riyadh and has a population of more than four million.
Jeddah Mayor Adel Fakieh, who made the announcement, thanked King Abdullah for his gesture, adding that the new facility would boost sports and youth activities in the Kingdom.
“King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah will be a huge cultural landmark and a symbol of comprehensive development in the Kingdom,” the mayor said, adding that the new facility would become a cultural and tourist attraction.
He said the sports city with advanced and modern facilities would allow the Kingdom to host major Arab and international sports events, and also serve people in Makkah and Taif.
