MANAMA: The $500 billion retail sector in the Middle East has entered into a new era of progress and development. The recently opened and upcoming major malls in Bahrain have established this country as one of the most dynamic retail business destinations in the region, an official at the regional retail body said.

“In 2008 Bahrain witnessed the opening of mega malls including the opening of three mega shopping centers in addition to many similar projects in the pipeline due to the increased demand,” said President of the Middle East Council of Shopping Centers (MECSC) Maher Al-Shaer.

“The development of shopping centers in the region last year has been outstanding; we have seen the opening of one of the largest shopping centers in the world which is the Dubai Mall along with one of the largest and most remarkable shopping centers in the Middle East based in Bahrain,” said Al-Shaer, who leads major retail sector developments in the region including the Bahrain City Center.
