JEDDAH: Sri Lankan International School, Jeddah, held its awards day over the weekend, when its students received awards and prizes from their Consul General Abdul Lateef Mohamed Lafeer. Prenelle Maheson, who obtained the best results at last year’s IGCSE exam was presented with a gold medal.
A number of students were honored on the occasion for their academic excellence during 2007-08 and English Day competitions in 2009. The function began with a welcome address by the school’s head prefect W. Yashodi Shashikala. School Principal activities F.H. Wahab, who reviewed the institution’s activities, said: “We are proud to reward the students who have striven hard to achieve excellence in curricular and co-curricular activities.”
Certificates and gift vouchers were awarded for general proficiency — 1st, 2nd & 3rd places to students from Grade 1 to Grade 9. Top subject prizes were also given to students from Grade 1 to Grade 9. Also, students who obtained A’s at the IGCSE examination held in 2008, were honored at this ceremony.
The IGCSE subject teachers too were felicitated at this ceremony. Certificates were also awarded to winners of the poetry, oratory, creative writing, and impromptu speech competitions during the year and for regular attendance.
The certificates and prizes were awarded to students by the consul general and his wife Inaya Lafir, the principal, Board of Management’s Chairman M.L.M. Imran and Deputy Chairman Susantha Subasinghe, board advisors -— Shahul Hameed Salih and Subbiah Maheson, guest speaker Ravi Shanker, Sri Lankan Expatriates Society President Robert Mathew and Professionals Association Vice President Farveez Shahabdeen.
There were group presentations by students of the primary classes and also the students who obtained first places at the oratory and poetry competitions performed on stage. “We should use our intuition to overcome obstacles and reach our goals,” the consul general said. “Every obstacle should be taken as a stepping stone to move forward. Children should put in more effort to succeed.”
Ravi Shanker said motivation is important for both young and old to fulfill one’s goal. Therefore, teachers should adopt various methods to motivate the children to study. Deputy Head Prefect Yasir Razzak proposed a vote of thanks.
